I loved Alex Stone’s book The Perfect Daughter so I could not wait to dive into her newest book The Other Girlfriend!
Lizzie Green who now goes by Beth once loved Tom Murphy with all her might, they were inseparable growing up and ended up going to the same Uni. But then one day, Lizzie realised that she was in love with Tom, only there was just one problem…he already had a girlfriend in the gorgeous and wealthy Hannah.
Tom was the prefevbial villian in this book, you could see he was stringing Lizzie along, telling her he was going to end it with Hannah and then they could be together, he just needed to get his foot in the door of her fathers business then let her down gently. He played on Lizzies love for him. he knew she loved him – heck everyone did and Hannah could also see it!
One night they all went away as a group of friends, and of course Tom and Hannah make an appearance, this really irks Lizzie and she ends up having too much to drink. A game of truth or dare sees Hannah fall to her death and leaves Lizzie in a state of turmoil. She has block in her memory about what really happened that night and she keeps playing the whole thing over and over in her mind that if begins to affect her time at uni.
She leaves her course and her friends as well as Tom in the past but then 10 years later he turns up on her doorstep! It opens up that night again for her playing like a merry go round in her mind, she wants to get the answers she so desperately needs to ease her feelings for guilt. but Tom is a slimeball and gaslights her memories so much that she doesn’t know what to believe anymore.
I could see where the truth was heading way before Lizzie/Beth and I was urging her to take off her rose tinted glasses towards Tom and see him for who he really was!
This was an enjoyable story and I look forward to reading more from Alex.
